Archibald Roosevelt, born in 1894, was the second son of President Theodore Roosevelt, and this c1903 portrait shows him as a boy of about nine on a pony. The Roosevelt children were famously fond of animals and outdoor life at the White House and at Sagamore Hill, their home on Long Island, and the pony pictures of the era often reflected that open, active upbringing. The print was made by Pach Bros., a New York studio known for portraits of prominent sitters, and it was registered for copyright with the U.S. Copyright Office, which is why it survives in the Library of Congress collection.
