Archie Roosevelt, the youngest of Theodore Roosevelt's sons, sits astride a pony at Sagamore Hill, the family's estate on Long Island's north shore. The photograph was taken by Frances Benjamin Johnston, one of the most prominent women photographers of her day, who made a number of portraits of the Roosevelt household during these years. Archie was a boy at the time, and the picture captures the informal family life that the press and public often followed closely while his father held the presidency. The image is part of the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection at the Library of Congress.
