Archie Roosevelt, the youngest son of President Theodore Roosevelt, appears here as a boy of about seven or eight, posing with a uniformed policeman who was evidently his friend. The Roosevelt children were a frequent subject of the photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston, who documented the family during their years in the White House from 1901 to 1909. Informal portraits like this one, with a child and an everyday public servant side by side, offered a warmer view of the presidential household than the formal state portraits of the era. The picture's date of June 17, 1902, places it during the family's first full summer in Washington.
