Archie Roosevelt, the youngest son of Theodore Roosevelt, is the subject here, shown on a bicycle in a photograph dated around June 17, 1902. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a leading photographer of the period who worked widely in Washington society and among the presidential family, made the picture, and it survives in the Library of Congress as part of her collection. Archie was a boy in the White House years, and images like this one show the Roosevelt children at ease with the outdoor pastimes that the family encouraged. Multiple copies of the print are held, which suggests it circulated widely at the time.
