The Stormer Bicycle is a lithograph from about 1896, a year when the bicycle craze was at its height in the United States and Europe. Bicycles of this period were a new kind of personal machine, and advertising posters and trade prints like this one were used to make them appealing to a broad public. The print is held by the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress, where it survives as an example of the commercial graphic art that accompanied the 1890s cycling boom. Its color stone printing would have been a relatively costly technique, which suggests the image was meant to catch the eye of buyers in shops and on the street.
