A man pedaling a bicycle with a small child riding in a box on the back sets this August 1924 view apart from other pictures of bicycles. The record places it in Preston, California, but it does not name the man or the child, so their identities remain unknown. The photograph was made months after Congress passed the Immigration Act of 1924, which barred immigration from Japan, so an everyday scene of family life from that period carries more weight than its simple subject suggests.
