A man rides a high-wheeled bicycle at the front of this Detroit procession, its enormous front wheel set against the motorcars that follow. The title says the entry was meant to show the evolution of the bicycle, and it was staged during the Cadillaqua, the celebration of Detroit's bicentennial, which marked the 1701 founding of the settlement by Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac. The automobile parade gave the event a forward-looking theme, so an old-style wheel riding alongside new machines makes the point about how quickly personal transportation was changing.
