Bicycle riders in a Fourth of July parade through Vale, a small town in eastern Oregon's Malheur County, make up the subject of this July 1941 photograph. Parades like this were a common part of small-town holiday life across the rural West, when children and young adults decorated their bikes and rode alongside floats and marching bands. The image was made on a nitrate negative and later copied through the Farm Security Administration and Office of War Information collection, which documented American life during the Depression and the early war years. Its date places it just months before the United States entered World War II.
