This print shows a rider named Walthour during a six-day race in December 1909, a single photograph from the George Grantham Bain Collection of news pictures. Six-day races were grueling endurance contests in which teams of riders circled a steeply banked wooden track around the clock, with partners taking turns so that the track was never empty. The events drew large crowds in the early 1900s, and they were a major part of American sporting life at the time. Bain's staff supplied newspapers with photographs like this one, so the picture captures the look of the sport as the public saw it.
