Few pictures on this board show a single named rider, and this one is captioned for Leon Georget, whose name appears in period sports references. The photograph is dated December 2, 1908, and comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news pictures made in New York and widely used by newspapers. In the years around 1900 to 1910, track cycling drew large crowds to indoor velodromes and six-day races, and portraits like this helped spread the names of popular riders.
