Eddie Root, named on the caption card as a bicycle rider, is the subject that sets this print apart from other racing images in the Bain Collection. The Bain News Service, a commercial photo agency, photographed many track athletes of the period for newspaper use. Board-track velodromes and six-day races drew large crowds in the years before the First World War, and cycling stars were among the best-known sports figures of the day. The card is undated and its details were transcribed from older records, so the exact occasion remains uncertain. The print still offers a direct look at the equipment and dress of a racer during the sport's popularity in American cities.
