A man in a three-piece suit stands beside a high-wheel bicycle, its huge front wheel towering over him, in what looks like an indoor studio setting. High-wheelers, often called penny-farthings, were the fashion for fast, adventurous riders in the 1870s and 1880s, before the safety bicycle with its chain drive and equal-sized wheels took over in the 1890s. Riding one took real skill and some nerve, since a fall from that height could be serious. Posed portraits like this one were a popular way for riders to show off their machines and their status.
