A bicycle loaded with fifteen bells, ten lights, six tire pumps and an embroidered seat cover is an unusual sight even among the many cycle photographs on this board, and the caption's list of gadgets reads almost like an inventory of a traveling tinkerer's pride. The photograph was taken in Bangkok, then known in the West as Siam, a city where bicycles had become a common means of getting around by the early twentieth century, often used for hauling goods and for short trips through crowded streets. The caption card gives no date, so the exact year is unknown, but the scene shows how an owner could decorate an ordinary machine into a personal display. Look closely at the seat cover and the clustered accessories for the kind of everyday ingenuity that rarely made it into official records.
