A finish-line scene from an L.A.W. (League of American Wheelmen) race, the card's title refers to the "safety" bicycle, the chain-driven, low-framed design that replaced the high-wheeled penny-farthing in the late 1880s and helped bring cycling to a much wider public. Niagara Falls photographer George Barker made his name with stereo views of the falls and its surroundings, and this card shows that he also turned his camera to the sporting crowds that gathered in the area. The stereo format, with its paired images viewed through a hand viewer, was a popular home entertainment of the period, so the card offers a window onto both the bicycle craze and the parlor culture that carried it.
