The title points to the "deadheads," a term from early baseball for people who got into games without paying, often through passes, free admissions, or hangers-on around the team. That makes the subject less the game itself than the crowd at its edges. The Bain News Service, a Manhattan-based wire photo agency, made the glass negative, and its collection now sits at the Library of Congress. The date of about 1911 comes from later research by baseball historians, not from the original caption, so it is an estimate. Around that time, Cleveland's American League club drew large crowds, and photographs like this one show how loosely admission was policed in the early years of professional baseball.
