Pete Shields, a catcher, is shown at spring training with the Cleveland American League club, and the picture's date, March 31, 1913, places him in camp during the early weeks of the season. The negative is a glass plate from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the photo service that supplied news pictures to American newspapers in the early twentieth century. Bain's caption cards marked the sitter simply as "Shields, Cleve," and the baseball identification was added later by researchers with the Society for American Baseball Research. Spring training in that era was a rough, outdoor affair, with players working out in warm-weather towns before the regular schedule opened.
