This Bain News Service glass negative shows Willie Mitchell, a pitcher for the Cleveland club in the American League, identified on the original caption as "Cleve." The Cleveland team was then known as the Naps, named for player-manager Napoleon Lajoie. The date of [1913] is a bracketed estimate, based on 2006 research by the Society for American Baseball Research's Pictorial History Committee. Bain's studio made thousands of such portraits of sports figures and news subjects for newspapers, so the image shows the everyday press photography of the period.
