This picture places Cleveland pitcher Vean Gregg away from home, at Hilltop Park in northern Manhattan, where the New York Highlanders played from 1903 until the franchise moved into the Polo Grounds in 1913. The Bain News Service, a wire-photo agency, made the negative, and its caption card identifies him only as "Gregg, Cleve. A.," with the 1912 date assigned later by baseball researchers at the Society for American Baseball Research. Bain's glass plates are a useful record of ballplayers and ballparks in the years before news photos were routinely printed in newspapers.
