Fred Carisch is the subject here, a Cleveland Naps player photographed in the spring of 1913 for the Bain News Service, the Manhattan agency whose glass negatives make up the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. The caption card dates the sitting to March 18, 1913, and the name Cleve. places the team in Cleveland. Carisch was a utility infielder who spent his brief major league career with that club, and portraits like this one were quickly distributed to newspapers and magazines, which is why so many early ballplayers survive in these negatives. The date and identification come from research by the Society for American Baseball Research, since the original notes give little beyond the name and sitting date.
