Dated May 2, 1863, this sheet shows Dowdall's Tavern, the headquarters Maj. Gen. Oliver O. Howard used near Chancellorsville, Virginia. That afternoon, Stonewall Jackson's Confederates struck the exposed flank of Howard's XI Corps, routing much of the Union line and reshaping the battle. The drawing, done in pencil, Chinese white and black ink on tan paper, offers a rare view of a headquarters in the middle of that upheaval, with soldiers and troop movements around the buildings.
