From the summit of Maryland Heights, the view runs south over the Potomac and down the Shenandoah Valley, and this sheet shows the military camps spread across the ground below. Maryland Heights rises above Harpers Ferry, where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet, and both Union and Confederate forces fought over the position repeatedly during the Civil War. The artist worked in pencil and Chinese white on light green paper, a economical method suited to quick field sketches that could be turned into maps or later finished work. Its value lies in showing how the high ground and river crossings shaped where armies camped and watched.
