Cold Harbor, a crossroads near Richmond, was the site of one of the bloodiest assaults of the Overland Campaign in early June 1864, when Union troops under Ulysses S. Grant attacked entrenched Confederate lines and suffered heavy losses in a short time. This print is a later work, copyrighted around 1888, roughly two decades after the fighting. The catalog record associates it with the Chicago firm Kurz & Allison, known for popular chromolithographs of Civil War battles, though that attribution is noted as unverified. Such prints reflected how Americans remembered the war by then, often emphasizing drama and heroism over the grim realities of the field.
