Kurz & Allison's chromolithograph of the Battle of Nashville captures the December 1864 fight in which Union forces under Maj. Gen. George H. Thomas broke the Confederate Army of Tennessee led by John Bell Hood, ending the Confederacy's last major offensive in the Western Theater. Chicago firm Kurz & Allison, known for vivid battle scenes sold to a popular market, produced such prints in the late 1880s, so the image reflects how the war was remembered decades later as much as how it looked in 1864. Viewers often note the dramatic color and crowded action, which turn a two-day engagement into a single sweeping scene.
