This is a 1914 portrait of Casey Stengel, the outfielder who played for the Brooklyn National League club in the years before he became one of baseball's best-known managers. The print comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the news photo files of a New York agency that supplied pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Portraits like this one, taken for the press during the season's early weeks, show how teams and players were presented to fans before radio and television. Stengel's later career with the Yankees and the Mets, and his election to the Hall of Fame, give the image added interest for anyone tracing his path.
