Zack Wheat, the Brooklyn outfielder pictured here, spent nearly his whole career with one club, playing for Brooklyn from 1909 into the 1926 season. He was a left-handed hitter known for consistent batting, and he was later elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. This portrait comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a New York news photographer whose work documented the city's sports, politics and daily life in the 1910s. Its April 1914 date places it near the start of the baseball season, when teams and newspapers routinely photographed their players.
