The Dictator was the name of a 13-inch mortar photographed in position at Petersburg, Virginia, in 1864, during the long siege when the armies had settled into months of trench warfare. Mortars of this size lobbed heavy explosive shells in high arcs over earthworks, reaching Confederate positions that ordinary field guns could not hit. The picture was made with a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required the photographer to coat, expose and develop each plate before it dried, so the clarity of such a massive weapon is worth noticing. The image was later issued by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company.
