Mathew Brady's photographic wagon, parked before the lines at Petersburg, Virginia, is the subject here, a rare look at the traveling darkroom that made the field work of his teams possible. Brady's operators carried wet collodion plates, which had to be coated, exposed and developed before they dried, so the wagon served as a portable laboratory on campaign. The glass negative belongs to the Library of Congress Civil War collection, and the print was issued under the War Photograph and Exhibition Company name. Petersburg was under siege in 1864, and images like this one document the logistics behind the war's photographs as much as the war itself.
