Mullan, a mining town in northern Idaho's Silver Valley, is the place this picture records, with its fire department turned out for Decoration Day in 1912. Decoration Day, the forerunner of Memorial Day, was when many American communities honored their war dead, and local fire companies often took part in the parades, showing off their apparatus alongside marching citizens. The photograph is credited as copyrighted by H.E. English, but its date and caption details come from an old card and have not been independently verified. The catalog lists fire engines as the subject, which makes it a useful glimpse of small-town firefighting equipment of the period.
