A Washington, D.C., fire department car, photographed for the Semmes Motor Company, is the subject of this glass negative, which dates to between 1916 and 1917. These years saw many American cities begin replacing horse-drawn fire apparatus with motor vehicles, which could reach blazes faster and did not need stabling for horses. The National Photo Company, which recorded daily life and commerce in Washington during this period, made the negative, and Herbert A. French gave it to the Library of Congress in 1947. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from natural deterioration of its original coatings.
