Photographs of women posed beside fire apparatus from this period are uncommon, which makes this glass negative from Clarendon, Virginia, stand out on the board. The National Photo Company, which documented Washington and the surrounding region, made the picture sometime between 1909 and 1920, when most fire companies were staffed entirely by men and women were more often connected to them in auxiliary or social roles. The title comes from data the company wrote on the negative and has not been independently verified, so the group's exact purpose remains uncertain. The plate also shows the streaks and blemishes that often appear as glass negatives age.
