Lake Huntington, a village in Sullivan County in the Catskill region of New York, is the place this picture documents, with its volunteer fire department shown as the subject. Around 1915, many small American towns still relied on volunteer companies to protect homes, shops, and farms, and their engine houses and equipment were often the pride of the community. The photograph was registered for copyright by the commercial studio Sampson & Lovin, which is why a copyright deposit record survives at the Library of Congress. Because the catalog entry is based on an old caption card, the exact details of the apparatus and the men pictured should be checked against other sources.
