Few Currier & Ives prints from the mid-1880s show an entire administration on one sheet, and this lithograph does so for Grover Cleveland and his cabinet. Cleveland took office in March 1885 as the first Democrat elected president since James Buchanan, so his appointments marked a real change after decades of Republican control in the White House. The New York firm sold inexpensive lithographs to a broad public, and group portraits like this one helped Americans put faces to the men who ran the government. The record does not name the artist or identify each figure.
