Few pictures of Lincoln's funeral record the decorated structures themselves, but this drawing shows a building erected to receive the President's body when the funeral train stopped in Cleveland on April 28, 1865, on its way to Springfield. The artist's note above the image, that the flags are drooping because it rained hard all day, conveys the somber, rain-soaked mood of the stop. A second inscription in the left margin points to a separate house where the first subscriptions to the Boston *Liberator*, William Lloyd Garrison's abolitionist paper, were gathered, a reminder of the antislavery movement behind the nation's mourning.
