Few portraits from the 1890s show a president and his wife as openly as this one, which the record dates to about 1893, the year Grover Cleveland began his second, nonconsecutive term. Frances Folsom Cleveland, who was 21 when she married him in 1886, was the first First Lady to be wed in the White House, and she became a popular public figure during his years in office. The print's copyright notice credits F. Miller, but the date and attributions come from an old caption card, so they are worth checking against other sources. The Cleveland name on this board is only a coincidence, since the president was born in New Jersey, not in the Ohio city.
