Seated at a desk and photographed from the waist up, facing the camera squarely, Grover Cleveland appears here near the end of his life, when he was living in Princeton, New Jersey. He was the only president to serve two nonconsecutive terms, from 1885 to 1889 and again from 1893 to 1897, a stretch that included the Panic of 1893 and his fights over tariffs and the gold standard. The New York Herald Company's copyright credit suggests the print was made for newspaper or public circulation. Cleveland died in June 1908, so the picture likely dates from his final year.
