This engraved portrait shows Grover Cleveland, who rose from sheriff of Erie County and mayor of Buffalo to governor of New York before winning the presidency in 1884. The print dates from the years when engraved likenesses of public men were widely copied into newspapers, magazines, and bound volumes, so it reflects how many Americans first came to know their national leaders. Cleveland is remembered as the only president to serve two nonconsecutive terms, from 1885 to 1889 and again from 1893 to 1897, which is why he is counted as both the 22nd and 24th president.
