This head-and-shoulders portrait shows John Fitch Cleveland (1819-1876) in an oval frame, turned to the right. Because he died in 1876, the photogravure was made after his death, probably from an earlier photograph, since the record dates it only to between 1879 and 1890. Photogravure was a fine intaglio process prized in the 1880s for its tonal richness, and it was often used to reproduce portraits in books and commemorative publications. The record does not name the original photographer or the publication, so the picture is best read as a memorial likeness shaped by the taste of its time.
