Here the Cleveland in question is not the Ohio city but President Grover Cleveland, shown as the companion of John Bull, the long-standing personification of Britain. Published in New York around 1888, the year Cleveland sought reelection, the hand-colored lithograph reflects the firm's habit of using caricature to comment on election-year politics. The pairing likely points to Cleveland's push to lower the tariff, a policy that free-trade advocates in Britain and America welcomed. The print is cataloged as number 3516 in the Gale Research catalog raisonné of Currier & Ives.
