Little is recorded about the sitter beyond the name the Bain News Service gave him, John McGuire of Cleveland, shown seated in a rocking chair. The picture survives as a glass negative, a format that news and studio photographers of the early twentieth century used for its sharpness and fine detail. George Grantham Bain ran his news photo agency from New York, supplying pictures of people and events to newspapers around the country. The title comes from caption cards written at the agency, so the identification should be treated as provisional.
