This group portrait shows President Grover Cleveland, Vice President Thomas A. Hendricks, and the members of Cleveland's cabinet, taken in July 1885, about four months after his inauguration. Cleveland was the first Democrat to win the presidency since James Buchanan, so the sitting marked a change in party leadership after decades of Republican administrations. Hendricks died in office that November, only months after the photograph was made, which gives the picture added weight. The record lists the U.S. Art Co. as an associated name, and the copyright entry shows it was registered for publication.
