A Judge magazine cover from late September 1884, this chromolithograph takes aim at Grover Cleveland, the Democratic nominee for president, during a campaign that turned on a private scandal. Cleveland had acknowledged that he was the father of an illegitimate child born years earlier in Buffalo, New York, and the charge gave Republican satirists a steady supply of material. The title, "Another voice for Cleveland," is a pointed joke that makes the candidate's personal life the subject. Color political cartoons like this one were a popular and pointed part of 1880s American print culture.
