Few fish on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts are as easy to recognize as the sheepshead, with its silver body, dark vertical bars, and human-like front teeth. This 1878 chromolithograph renders the fish in color, built up from a separate printing stone for each hue, a method widely used for natural history plates by the late 1870s. The name is often linked to those teeth, which look like a sheep's, and the fish has long been valued as a food fish and as a catch for anglers working around pilings and oyster reefs. Look closely at the fins and markings, the details naturalists relied on to tell species apart.
