This head-and-shoulders portrait shows Victor Henri Rochfort-Lucay, the French journalist and politician better known as Henri Rochefort, turned to the right in a formal pose. Rochefort made his name with *La Lanterne*, a sharply satirical paper that mocked the Second Empire and drew repeated censorship and imprisonment. The record dates the print to about 1871, a year of upheaval in Paris, when Rochefort was elected to the National Assembly and then became associated with the Paris Commune. His later deportation to New Caledonia and escape made him one of the period's most watched political figures, and the portrait captures the composed bearing of a man whose public life was anything but calm.
