Justo Rufino Barrios (born 1835) was president of Guatemala from 1873 until his death in battle in 1885, and this photo-engraving shows him in a formal head-and-shoulders view turned to his right. Reproductions like this one were widely circulated in the 1890s, when newspapers and illustrated periodicals relied on photo-engraving to print portraits quickly and cheaply. The record dates the print to 1897, twelve years after Barrios's death, so it likely served as a memorial image of a leader remembered for his liberal reforms, including the expansion of coffee cultivation and efforts to curb the Catholic Church's influence. Notice the crisp tonal detail the process could hold on a small printed page.
