An engraved portrait of Margaret Fuller (1810-1850) gives a face to one of the most influential voices in nineteenth-century American letters. Fuller edited the Transcendentalist journal *The Dial* and wrote *Woman in the Nineteenth Century* (1845), an early and forceful argument for women's intellectual and social equality. She later worked as a foreign correspondent for the *New-York Tribune* in Europe, where she covered the revolutionary upheavals of 1848-1849. Engraved likenesses like this one circulated widely in the decades after her death at sea in 1850, shaping how readers remembered her.
