Sands's Sarsaparilla was one of many bottled tonics sold in the 1840s, when printed labels did much of the selling for patent medicines. Sarsaparilla was then widely promoted as a remedy that could purify the blood and relieve a long list of complaints. The label carries a copyright notice in the name of Levi Oberholtzer, M.D., a reminder that the period's medicine trade was crowded with doctors and proprietors competing for buyers' attention. It is worth noticing how much of that competition rested on the label itself, which was often the main thing a shopper saw before buying.
