Martha Jane Burke, known to the public as Calamity Jane, is the figure this portrait sets apart from the other notable people on the board. She became one of the best-known characters of the American frontier, with her name linked to the Black Hills and to the mining camps of Dakota Territory in the 1870s. Her reputation grew through dime novels and later through Wild West shows, where her life was often embellished for audiences. Worth noticing is how the image helped shape that legend, since many of the stories told about her were as much publicity as fact.
