Janet Flanner, who wrote under the pen name Genêt, sits for this seated portrait, a view of the writer who later became known for her reporting from Paris. Flanner began her "Letter from Paris" column for *The New Yorker* in 1925 and kept it going for roughly half a century, covering French politics, culture and everyday life for American readers. Her precise, observant prose made her one of the magazine's most distinctive voices, and her letters shaped how many Americans understood Europe between the wars and after. The portrait is a useful reminder of how a single correspondent could define a foreign city for a generation of readers.
