Galileo sits at his writing desk in this portrait, turned toward the left, a pose that fits a man whose fame rested on close observation and written argument. The mezzotint method, which builds tone by roughening a copper plate and scraping away the burr, let engravers render soft shadows and the texture of paper and cloth. Galileo (1564-1642) is remembered for his telescope observations of Jupiter's moons and for his trial by the Roman Inquisition in 1633, and the caption card records no date for this particular print.
