Unlike many ship portraits on this board, this one shows the U.S.S. Boston, a steel protected cruiser commissioned in 1884 as one of the first modern warships built for the young U.S. Navy after its long postwar decline. The print dates to about 1891, when the ship was serving in the Pacific and Asiatic waters, and its maker, Boston photographer Henry G. Peabody, was known for commercial views of the city and its waterfront. The mix of sail-era rigging and newer steel hull lines visible in such pictures marks the transition from wooden fleets to the armored, steam-powered navy that followed.
